Anh H Van phoned and gave the sad news that uncle Chau had just passed away last night (6 July 2009). He had been hospitalised for pneumonia a week before. It was too much for him and he passed away at the age of 74. H Van and I went to his home to comfort aunty but when we arrived there was no one home (even though H Van did ring them before coming). H Van has been pretty fit as I observed the way he pedaled uphill. The stents in his cardiac arteries have been a great help to relieve angina. Unlike the last time we went out about a year ago there was no huffing and puffing this time. Today's progress in medicine has been tremendous!
It was a good chance fot H Van and I to catch up. He showed me the slide shows he made in the last two years when he had been working in Vietnam. It seemed that he had a great time there. The subject of Buddhism came up in the conversation. H Van was well aware that there must be no attachment to the good times.
...
All things are impermanent.
All have their beginnings and ends.
To achieve peace of mind:
Be aware that they are impermanent
Understand that attachment to them are the cause 0f unhappiness
To put this understanding into practice - and remind oneself of the nature of things
Peace will come only when non-attachment prevails.

Swine Flu
It has been a nice week in Sydney. Monday was spent at S Strathfield to help James and to recover from the Swine(?) flu. It was always relaxing to work with James in comparison with John. James and I discussed issues of acquiring and running a business. His advice was to lower the fixed cost such as the weekly rent. Dont work for the landlord/landlady.
There were customers that James gave huge discounts! I admired his generosity but did not get how he should do what he did.
I had the rest of the week for myself and started to work around the house. Tuesday saw the abrupt burst of the hot water system and until Thursday morning a group of plumbers came to fix it. Rod (Menai Plumbers) and his two younger guys were professional and they replaced the HWS in no time, they also digged out the sewer gully which was clogged up by the the yukky stuff from the kitchen sink. M 200.
Friday was a very windy day and the T dropped too giving rise to a sudden feeling of cold and being wintry. KT and I went to Flemmington for fruits and then to the market for grocery and meal. It is good to be with KT who enjoys shopping. I love the look of her face when she just got something nice. She gave advice on how to buy : how to choose and how to judge if the price right.
